Pumpkin Raisin Bread

Sometimes a day is just so long and crappy that the only thing that can fix it is baking.  Is that just me?  I suppose what I really mean is that the only thing that can fix it is cake, or cookies, or a brownie, or whatever your poison is – but being that I’m extremely picky about what ingredients I’m willing to eat, I can’t just pop into any little store and pick up a treat.  So, baking it is.

Just as effective as Prozac.

It finally decided to get chilly here in L.A. – at least in the evenings, which is a compromise I’m willing to accept.  Since it actually feels like autumn now, I wanted to try this Paleo Pumpkin Bread recipe from Elana’s Pantry.  It’s made with almond flour and sweetened with honey and stevia, which as you know, are a few of my favorite things.

Grass-fed Ground Brisket Burgers

Well, thanks for clearing that up.

So after a very busy and stressed out couple of weeks, I’ve really been looking forward to this weekend.  With a little break before the next round of holidays (and holiday travel – eek!) I have a couple of free weekends to get some household projects rolling, play with some recipes, and of course, get back to writing here.  I had no idea what I was going to cook or write about this weekend, but come hell or high water, it was gonna happen.  I was thinking about this on the way home from work Friday night, when the question was answered for me.  I walked up to my front door to find the most beautiful surprise that any Primal girl could ask for.  A big box of meat.

I had completely forgotten that I had an assortment of grass-fed beef from Rocky Mountain Organic Meats coming to me, so this was like a little bit of Christmas come early.   I still had a tough decision to make though – which to try first?

I always love reading comments and feedback from all of you.  I especially love getting the little email alert that I have a new subscriber – and I’ve received quite a few lately, so thank you, that makes my day!  And how do I repay you all?  By disappearing for a week and not sharing any of the awesome new stuff I’ve been coming up with.  Shameful.  The truth is that the past couple of weeks have been incredibly busy, both at work and at home, and I haven’t had much time for writing.  I have been cooking – obviously, because being Primal means making my own food or starving – but I just haven’t had a chance to share.  I promise to have something fabulous and yummy for you in the coming week.

Rarely do I look this pleased while watching the clock.

Primal Pumpkin Pecan Ice Cream

An unwelcome heat wave has hit Los Angeles.  Well, I don’t welcome it.  Maybe people who’ve never lived anywhere else enjoy 100 degree heat in mid-October and welcome it with open arms.  I, however, do not.  It’s not like I expected to bust out the winter coat any time soon…but I was tricked.  The same way the weather here always tricks me, and I fall for it every year.  It got chilly last week.  It even…gasp!…rained!  And, of course, some naïve little part of me hoped the cooler temperatures would stick around, even though I know the ugly truth is that I’ll be picking out my Christmas tree in shorts and a t-shirt.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer

This one is dedicated to my brother, who made it halfway through a conversation we were having about Starbucks “Pumpkin Spice Latte” thinking I was saying “bucket-size latte.”  Which, depending on the size you opt for, actually isn’t that far off…

We were discussing these sugar-bombs because of the Starbucks I had found conveniently located right in the middle of the casino where I was staying during my weekend in Las Vegas.  I’m always happy to find easily accessible coffee, but as I stood in line the following morning – fully intending to order a tall regular coffee – I saw it:

Frightening amounts of sugar, just in time for Halloween...

Not to sound like a broken record, but first Primal holiday season and all, plus these were a fall favorite in years past, plus I’m on vacation… So, yada yada yada before I know it I’m strolling through the maze of slot machines with the evil latte in my hand, rationalizing that I’d regain my self control once the temptation wasn’t a mere elevator ride away from my bed.

Dark Chocolate Bacon Bites

October 1st.  Halloween season is upon us.  Which means I want candy.  I don’t have children, so you’d assume I could coast through these kid-oriented holidays with no problem.  But I happen to be part of a generation who drenches everything in a large dose of irony and 80’s childhood nostalgia, often acting like kids ourselves even though my friends and I are all in our 30’s now.  And so Halloween becomes a month long cavalcade of horror movie nights, jack-o-lantern carving contests, and haunted houses.  Thanksgiving and Christmas receive the same treatment;  Just trade out The Shining for Miracle on 34th Street, and pumpkin-carving for Christmas tree-decorating parties, and there ya go.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love it.  The problem is the treats (or tricks, rather, for the Primal party-goer) that come along with the festivities.  I do just fine through the spring and summer, not really giving candy a second thought.  Almond flour baked goods and fruit desserts take care of any sweet cravings, and I roll on through August and into September with no problem.  But autumn means holidays, and holidays mean candy.

I’ve mentioned before that this will be my first Primal holiday season – which I see as a fun challenge rather than a sacrifice, since I’ve had no problem coming up with fabulous Primal substitutions for my favorite things thus far.  But when I saw the post for the Paleo Parents Halloween Recipe Round-Up, it got me thinking about what I really crave and miss this time of year.  If you guessed candy, great job!  I only mentioned it three times in the opening paragraph…
